Mirrors

Making mirrors has become a large part of my work, both commissioned and for exhibition. It is fun to experiment with a wide variety of materials and the design varies from simple to complex and ornate.

Mirrors can be assembled in any size and decorated in a variety of ways - with mosaic, appliqued  glass, leaded surrounds, including glass, agate slices , pebbles, and china. Some are really ‘room accessories’ to add a bit of colour and sparkle, like a brooch, while others are bigger and designed to make the space feel larger and lighter.

Crystal Mirrors

These are made by appliquéing a variety of different clear textured glasses and mirrors directly onto the surface of a mirror, with fused pieces  along the edges.  The effect is light and glowing and they seem to float on the wall.

China Bordered Mirrors

Some years ago I started using some of my chipped and broken, but precious to me, vintage china to frame mirrors. First I used it in mosaic, then developed a method of assembling the pretty bone china fragments with glass techniques using lead, copper foil and solder. As the china is mostly not flat the finished surround  has movement and flow.

This is a great way to bring a piece of loved but unusable  crockery back to life. And not unrelated to the Japanese method and concept of Kintsugi, where the old is respected, and the repairs are lacquered in gold, emphasised rather than camouflaged, adding value to the original piece.

I am happy to accept mirror commissions and can incorporate any materials that you would like to include.
